Image: Iran Hits British Base in Cyprus. The War Just Reached Europ
For the first time in this conflict, Iran has struck a military base on European soil. A drone hit RAF Akrotiri on the southern coast of Cyprus shortly after midnight local time Monday, damaging the airfield and triggering a security lockdown. Families living on the base were evacuated. No casualties were reported.
The timing was pointed. Just hours before the strike, the UK government confirmed it had authorized the United States to use British bases - including Akrotiri - to carry out attacks on Iranian missile sites. Tehran's answer came before sunrise.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed the drone hit on Monday morning. Defence Secretary John Healey said ballistic missiles had also been fired in the direction of Cyprus overnight, though those were intercepted. The Cypriot government called the incident "limited damage" from an "unmanned drone" and confirmed it was struck at a British air base on the island's southern coastline.
The Akrotiri strike is part of a broader overnight Iranian bombardment. Iran continued firing missiles and drones at Gulf states in the early hours of Monday. Air-raid sirens sounded in Bahrain before dawn. Residents of Qatar and the UAE reported heavy explosions. The IRGC confirmed it had struck four US military bases: Al Udeid in Qatar, Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, Al Dhafra in the UAE, and the US Navy Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
At least four people have been killed across the Gulf strikes. More than 450 injured. Falling missile debris - intercepted but not neutralized - caused widespread property damage in multiple cities.
Israel expanded its military campaign to Lebanon on Monday. The IDF launched heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas of Beirut's southern suburbs after the Iran-backed group fired rockets and drones over the border into northern Israel. Sirens activated across Haifa and the Upper Galilee. At least 31 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
Israel also launched new strikes into Iran itself, targeting Tehran. The three-front campaign - Iran, Lebanon, and across the Gulf - now spans a geographic arc from Cyprus to Kuwait.
President Trump, speaking on Sunday, said the US military is prepared to sustain its assault on Iran for "four to five weeks" if necessary. He also said he will "avenge" the deaths of US service members killed in Iranian retaliatory strikes, without confirming a casualty number. "It won't be difficult," Trump added, speaking of the coalition's ability to maintain strike tempo.
US officials told reporters they remain skeptical that a regime change in Tehran is achievable or even desired as an outcome. The stated goal remains dismantling Iran's nuclear and missile infrastructure.
The arc of the conflict is now wider than any post-2003 Middle East war. Iran is firing at US bases across eight countries simultaneously. Israel has re-entered Lebanon. A British NATO base has been struck. The only question left is where the next front opens.
